Every track on the album is just as memorable in it's own way, as the artist combines styles, genres, moods, and atmospheres across songs old and new. The album revisits while looking to the future. Upon release in 1971, Africa's Blood was the first record Lee 'Scratch' Perry released under his own name, although his band The Upsetters do appear on most of the tracks. If any album serves as a good peak into what was happening in Jamaican music in the early 70s, 'Africa's Blood' is the way to go. There is an undeniable influence from American contemporary R&B, but still Perry's signature dub and reggae fusion shines through. A limited edition on orange coloured vinyl, which makes the record look as vibrant as it sounds.

When English reggae band Aswad released their third album 'New Chapter' in 1981, it didn't perform as well as expected within the mainstream reggae market, and so the band decided to re-imagine the record with a dub remix. That did not go unnoticed: 'A New Chapter of Dub', released in 1982, went on to receive critical acclaim and is considered to be one of the greatest dub albums of all time. Known for it's shuddering bass and reverberated brass, as well as the traditional dub use of delay, drop-outs and echo, the album became a landmark in it's genre.

BLUE VINYL + BONUS 7". First time on vinyl for 1993 classic from ska originators. Part of the the Shanachie trilogy of 90's albums from legendary Jamaican big band that invented the genre in the early 1960's. Released in 1993, Ska Voovee finds original saxophonist Tommy McCook leading a lineup that includes original members (bassist Lloyd Brevett, drummer Lloyd Knibbs, alto saxophonist Lester Sterling ) alongside newcomers and jazz guests, including trombonist Steve Turre and trumpeter Frank Gordan. This edition of the Skatalites was quite faithful to the band's history, lively instrumentals like "Skamaica" and "Skapan" are instantly recognizable as authentic Skatalites performances. These dozen tunes are solid and engaging, an effort that both die-hard and casual fans will equally enjoy. Blue vinyl LP with bonus "Jamaican Blank" style 45 rpm 7 inch single, released for Record Store Day 2020.

They were one of the more significant trios of that era, and played a major role in the gradual transition between ska and rocksteady into reggae with their three-part harmonies. The Heptones were contemporaries of the Wailers and the Maytals, and every bit their equal in the mid-60's.

Errol Dunkley was an early reggae star and one of the youngest, recording his first side ("My Queen") at the age of 12 for Prince Buster in 1964 and scoring his first hit ("You're Gonna Need Me") in 1967. Later, he became a key performer in the '70s Brit-Reggae scene, just missing the Top Ten in 1978 with his remake of John Holt's "OK Fred." Helmed by groundbreaking female producer Sylvia Pottenger, Darling Ooh! Is actually his 1972 debut album, but like a lot of records that came out on small Jamaican mprints that later got swallowed into the mammoth Trojan label, it's history is complicated; this record came out on the Gay Feet label under the title Presenting Errol Dunkley and also on the Trojan imprint Attack the same year as Darling Ooh! #with different art and an expanded track listing (and, just to make things more confusing, a 1979 Trojan reissue had the Gay Feet track listing and the Attack artwork). Our Real Gone reissue reproduces the 1972 Attack release with it's, er, fetching cover art and expanded track listing (featuring the first appearance of the hit "A Little Way Different").

2010 release from the Hawaii-based Reggae rockers. Iration. Recorded Time Bomb with the intention of making an album that appeals to everyone - it combines Pop structures and melodies similar of those on their previous EP, Sample This, with a more Rock and Electronic feel. Analog synthesizers and unique guitar tones on each track help modernize their Reggae rhythm base. Focusing on making each song a stand alone "hit," the band approached each song differently in order to maximize the potential of each individual track. They wanted to make an album that people can listen to over and over again without getting bored or tired of it. Time Bomb is Iration's best effort yet and they look forward to expanding their Reggae-Rock/Pop foundation to infinite soundscapes in their future recordings.

Vinyl LP pressing. Reggae's popularity in Africa produced a new generation of African reggae stars such as Alpha Bondy and Lucky Dube. The latter became South Africa's first homegrown reggae star with his soulful, melodic yet message-oriented recordings. Vocally he evoked the style of his hero Peter Tosh. Yet Lucky's voice ranged beyond this similarity with a power and phrasing all his own. It's no surprise then that he became the most important new artist from South Africa in many years. South Africa's foremost reggae star continued to grow with 1992's House of Exile. His voice, powerful as always, presented more facets than the trademark Peter Tosh-style baritone that first attracted attention. Most impressive was his songwriting, which had become more sharply political. He addressed the struggle in South Africa as well as themes of personal liberation. With so much Jamaican reggae trending in a dance hall direction, it's heartening to hear and see the classic internationalist message of Marley, Tosh and Wailer carried on in Africa by Lucky.

Among the great things that I remember about these sessions were the superb players and singers who just showed up. Topical songs dominate the album from the title track, "Serious Thing" to "Freedom Train" and "My Thoughts." Once again, they revisited their own catalog of songs, re-recording, "Rearrange" (originally cut with Coxsone Dodd in the early '70s) and "Fling It Gimme" (originally a single for the group dating back to 1969). Even though reggae as a style of music was changing in the mid-'80s, The Gladiators played to their strengths and made another classic roots album. This newly remastered version of the album features the original LP's ten tracks in a beautiful gatefold jacket. Lyrics and liner notes from original Nighthawk Records' producer Leroy Jodie Pierson are also included. The Specials are one of the defining bands of the late 70’s/early 80’s along with Jerry Dammers iconic label Two Tone Records. Originally formed in 1977, as The Coventry Automatics, The Specials combined Jamaican ska and Rocksteady, mixed with the energy of punk they launched a whole Ska Revival. They also helped likeminded bands such as Madness, The Beat, The Selecter to release their first singles. The Specials released ‘Gangsters’ as their first single in the summer of ’79, quickly releasing the classic singles A Message To You Rudy, Do Nothing and Rat Race. They released their debut album ‘Specials’ in 1979, followed by ‘More Specials’ in 1980. During this time, the band has two UK Number One singles, a live version of ‘Too Much Too Young’ from ‘The Special AKA Live EP’ and the unforgettable ‘Ghost Town’ in the summer of 1981. Jerry Dammers continued as The Special AKA following the departure of band members in late 1981, releasing their third album ‘In The Studio’ which included the iconic single ‘Nelson Mandela’. This 20 track compilation collects all their key singles and album tracks, made available on heavyweight 180g vinyl for the first time.

Albert Griffiths founded The Gladiators in 1966 after some success on his own. The group scored their first hit, produced by legendary producer Coxsone Dodd, with "Hello Carol" in 1968. During the '70s The Gladiators made their way through releases on labels like Studio One, Upsetter, Virgin, and Groovemaster. 1980 found The Gladiators working with producer, and pre-"Electric Avenue" hitmaker, Eddy Grant on the album Gladiators, which also featured members of the band Aswad lending a musical hand. On 1982's Symbol Of Reality, their first for the Nighthawk Records label, they revisited their own catalog of songs re-recording their classics, "Dreadlocks The Time Is Now" (appearing here as "Streets Of Gold"), "Watch Out" and "Big Boo Boo Deh" (returning retitled as "Cheater") while also paying homage to The Wailers with covers "Small Axe" and "Stand Alone," both written by Bob Marley.

Fourteen years into an effervescent career, California reggae band and touring juggernaut Rebelution remains abundantly creative. Its members (singer/guitarist/lyricist Eric Rachmany, keyboardist Rory Carey, drummer Wesley Finley, and bassist Marley D. Williams) are as focused and committed as they are easygoing and laid-back. And they haven't lost a step since Falling Into Place, their 2016 studio album, became the band's fourth release to top the Billboard reggae chart, earning them their first ever Grammy nomination in the category of Best Reggae Album. Ever expanding and reaching wider audiences, the Rebelution phenomenon continues to spread good vibes on tour, and in the studio.

Free Rein, their sixth studio album, while still rooted in the Jamaican inspiration that Rebelution's songs and sounds have always paid homage to, takes experimental leaps and new adventures too, welcoming old fans and new audiences alike. The musicians collaborated with Jamaican artists on three of the 12 new tracks. Don Corleon (Sean Paul, Rihanna) produced Rise On Top, a pointed reflection on celebrity and ambition; and Winta James, producer for Damian Marley and Chronixx, worked with the band on Settle Down Easy; and City Life, two songs that reflect a more confessional perspective.

Celebrate, the new album's opening track, nods to the classic Rebelution sound. It has special meaning for the band too. In their long months on the road they've met fans with health struggles who've said that their music has helped them get through tough times. An energizing shout-out to one and all, the song celebrates the oneness of artist and audience.

Patience, a reggae-R&B hybrid, is another hymn to human connection, a haunting message from the well of romantic love: Maybe isn't good enough / I'm patient, I ain't giving up…Can I be your everything and more?

Other tracks take a wider perspective. City Life is one that hits home for Rachmany. There are moments, he says, speaking for urban dwellers everywhere, when I just want to get out and find some solitude and find the beauty of mother nature. The uptempo groove conveys the positive energy of this universal desire.

The band remains in touch with the traditions that it builds on. Much of the style, the songwriting, and the quality of the instrumentals derive from Jamaican roots, says Rachmany, stressing what an honor it is that producers from reggae's birthplace signed on to work with Rebelution.

By the early Seventies, Clancy Eccles sat firmly atop the reggae tree, having enjoyed a succession of hits both in Jamaica and the UK, where the bulk of his productions had seen issue on Trojan's Clandisc subsidiary. To capitalise on the popularity of his work, the London based record company chose to launch their new Big Shot label LP range with a collection comprising a dozen of his lesser known tracks that had remained unissued since being recorded two to three years earlier. Unfortunately, due to the age of the material, the resultant "Top Of The Ladder" album sounded dated compared to the reggae sounds of the day, with poor sales of the long-player leading to it being pulled after an initial pressing run of just a few hundred copies. Although largely overlooked by record buyers at the time, the LP's scarcity, allied to the high quality of the music featured within it's grooves has since led to it becoming one of the most sought-after Trojan collections on the market. Unavailable on any format for almost half a century, "Top Of The Ladder" is finally available once more, with it's dozen tracks bolstered by over 40 Clancy Eccles-produced sides from the early Seventies - including the original reggae version of 'Kingston' Town' and many recordings new to CD!
